RESEARCH
My work has primarily focused on developing barley varieties for biofuel using novel genes from exotic barley accessions. We have discovered barley varieties that store carbohydrates (fructan and fructooligosaccharides) in the straw at harvest and are working to understand the underlying genetics and physiology and have introgressed this trait into barley varieties adapted to Montana. This work has received the support of a Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) Barley for Rural Development grant, SunGrant/DOE, and the Montana Board of Research and Commercialization of Technology (MBRCT). I also manage the demonstration hopyard and vineyard located at the Horticulture Farm.
