General variety descriptions are based on performance in multi-year/location yield trials that were grown using recommended conventional wheat farming practices. Actual variety performance may vary, depending on local growing conditions and farming methods. All varieties listed are PVP protected.
MT BOY HOWDY (MAES release, 2023):
MT Cowgirl is a high performance, two-row forage hay barley line with taller plant height which likely contributes to the higher yield! MT Cowgirl tends to head earlier and mature later such that it has a longer grain fill period. The extended grain fill likely increases plump seed and might extend harvest flexibility.
MT COWGIRL (MAES release, 2022):
MT Cowgirl is a high performance, two-row forage hay barley line with taller plant height which likely contributes to the higher yield! MT Cowgirl tends to head earlier and mature later such that it has a longer grain fill period. The extended grain fill likely increases plump seed and might extend harvest flexibility.
MT DOUBLE BARREL (MAES release, 2025):
MT Double Barrel is a spring, two-row, hooded dual purpose (feed/forage) barley variety. MT Double Barrel has high grain and forage yield with improved quality. Plant stature and development is similar to Hays barley. MT Double Barrel has a large seed size due to stay green and may be related to lower test weight.
MT ENDURANCE (MAES release, 2023):
MT Endurance is a two-row, high performing malt barley variety with extended grain fill due to early heading that results in high plumps and low grain protein particularly in dryland. Stable malt quality during the drought of 2021. MT Endurance has 3% higher malt extract than controls. Irrigation can result in malt with elevated betaglucans. slower to modify than Buzz but faster than Hockett. MT Endurance can have acceptable malt quality with either two or three steeps.
MT KIDD (MAES release, 2026):
